Major changes to car registration, including reduced fees for vehicles with high safety standards have been released for public feedback.
The proposed changes, published in TfNSW’s Vehicle Registration Initiatives discussion paper, will be the biggest changes to light vehicle registration in NSW in 90 years. The current rego system dates back to 1924.
The proposed reforms include:
- Passenger vehicles: changing the new vehicle registration charge from one based on vehicle weight, to include safety and environmental criteria.
- Motorcycles: changing the current flat registration charge to include incentives to purchase motorcycles with lower power-to-weight ratios.
- Continuous registration: offering an automated, continuous registration option via online monthly direct debit – with no expiry date.
- Changes to stamp duty and CTP insurance charges as a way of offering added incentive to consumers purchasing safer and greener vehicles.
The changes will apply to new passenger vehicles, new motorcycles, and to all caravans and light trailers.
Roads Minister Duncan Gay said the new pricing system would have a positive impact on efforts to drive down road accident rates.
“Road crashes cost the NSW community more than $5 billion per year, so initiatives geared at encouraging motorists to choose safer vehicles will help to lower these costs”, Mr Gay said.
The Vehicle Registration Initiatives discussion paper is open for public consultation until 24 July 2014.
