A Rock fisherman was unable to be revived after being swept into the ocean at Lurline Bay, north of Maroubra beach. The Surf Rescue Emergency Response System was activated by Police and local duty officers responded to the incident.

Two off duty volunteer surf lifesavers who live above the scene paddled a board out and were able to assist the patient until council lifeguards aboard a jetski could respond. He was winched from the jetski by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue crew.

The father and son lifesaving team from South Maroubra SLSC were quick to respond and did all they could to keep the patient afloat, however he was unable to be revived by paramedics back on land.

Sea conditions have been dangerous over the last few days and it appears the fisherman was not wearing a lifejacket.

“Basic safety precautions like wearing a lifejacket are not being taken by many rock fishers,” said SLSNSW Manager of Lifesaving, Andy Kent.

“Our volunteer lifesavers, lifeguards and emergency services are constantly being called to rockfishing emergencies, often risking their own safety to try to rescue people. Fishermen need to wear a lifejacket, above all else. That way you buy yourself some time until we can get to you.”

Andy Kent also praised the effort of the surf lifesavers and lifeguards. “The conditions are pretty hazardous out there and the South Maroubra clubbies did a great job to respond the way they did.”

Surf lifesavers are concerned as the coastal drowning toll in NSW stands at 9 since 1 July, and the official surf patrol season hasn’t ‘even begun.
