A man has drowned while rock fishing at Tacking Point, Port Macquarie. In a separate incident, Surf Lifesavers are searching for a missing person, possibly a rock fisherman, after a car was found on the beach at Booti Booti National Park near Forster.

In Port Macquarie the alarm was raised when the man did not arrive for his golf game. The Surf Life Saving Emergency Response system was tasked by Police around 1.30pm and Marine Rescue and lifesavers aboard a jetski found the man floating beneath the water to the north of Tacking Point (Lighthouse Beach). The 46 year-old could not be revived.

Volunteers from Cape Hawke SLSC on the Lower North Coast have spent the afternoon assisting Marine Rescue and Police to search for a possible missing rockfisherman in the Booti Booti National Park after a vehicle was found on the beach, possibly left for some time.

While seas are not particularly large or hazardous this weekend, these incidents highlight the dangers of rockfishing and Surf Life Saving NSW urges people to follow basic safety precautions at all times.

These include:
* Always wear a lifejacket and non-slip footwear
* Check tides, swell and weather conditions
* Fish with a friend – never fish alone
* Carry a mobile phone
* Never turn your back to the sea
* Always spend time watching the conditions before fishing, and constantly scan for changing conditions
* If in doubt, don’t go out!
