Minister for Mental Health Jai Rowell kicked off National R U OK? Day by highlighting the difference friendship can make to our lives.

Minister Rowell spoke at the official welcome of the ‘R U OK?’ bus to Sydney after a month long tour through regional and remote communities and capital cities across Australia. He said he was pleased to see the message behind the day had touched so many people.

“‘R U OK?’ Day is one of those fantastic initiatives that enjoys such an outstanding level of community support, and that is because it has such a simple message that we can all make a powerful difference in the lives of those we care about,” Minister Rowell said.

‘R U OK? ’ is a national suicide prevention initiative. It provides resources to help people get the conversation started, as well as links to help direct people to the mental health help they may need.

“Simply by asking someone ‘are you OK?’, we let them know that we care, and for those who are doing it tough we can help them get the support they need”, Minister Rowell said.

“I would urge everyone to take this simple message on board, not just today but throughout the year, and help to show your friends that you are there to support them when times get tough.”.
