Dangerous surf forecast to hit NSW coast

Surf Life Saving New South Wales is urging all coastal water users to exercise caution over the next 48 hours as dangerous surf conditions have been forecast.

From Friday a south-to-south-easterly swell of up to 4 metres with a swell period of up to 12 seconds is expected to affect the entire NSW coastline.

The hazardous conditions have been forecast to continue into Saturday before it is likely to ease later that evening and into Sunday.

Extra care should be taken by boat skippers crossing coastal bars, rockfishers, swimmers and surfers.

The tragic death last weekend of a woman rock fishing on the states’ Central Coast was a timely reminder of the importance of wearing a life jacket and always fishing with a partner.

NSW Lifesaving Manager Andy Kent has implored the public to take these warnings seriously. “These warnings are issued for a reason, and an unpredictable swell can be a hazard to both the individual and those tasked with rescuing them if they do get into difficulty,” Mr Kent said. “We encourage everyone to look out for each other, and if you do get into difficulty stay calm and signal for assistance from a lifesaver or lifeguard.”

Some beaches may be closed due to hazardous conditions. Check the Beachsafe website for up-to-date beach information.

Tips For Keeping Safe During Hazardous Surf Conditions

  • Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves.
  • Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags.
  • Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities. (www.bom.gov.au/nsw/)
  • Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket. (www.marinerescuensw.com.au/boating-safety)
  • See www.beachsafe.org.au for patrolled locations/times and rock fishing safety information.
  • If witnessing an in-water emergency call Triple Zero – Police.
