Hundreds of people from Indian community along with others gathered in Parramatta Park on Wednesday evening to pay homage to Prabha Arun Kumar who was brutally stabbed to death in the park on Saturday night.
It was a short walk that many of them had taken before, but this time the reason was different. Even rain and thunder couldn’t deter the spirits of the people who gathered in large numbers to pay respect to the departed soul.
As a part of the walk, besides lighting candles and floral tributes, a two minutes silence was observed by the community people.
Prabha Arun Kumar, 41-year-old IT professional, was taking a shortcut through Parramatta Park in the west of the city while returning to home from work when she was stabbed by an unknown person who was following her.
Arunesh Seth of Indian community organized the community walk to bring the community together and to pay homage to the departed soul.
“Through this walk we wanted to show our resentment, anger and anguish over this fatal attack. Though these attacks are not very uncommon but the problem is that they are hardly reported,” said Arunesh.
“If you come across any such incidence, please report it. This will help the police in having a clear picture of what is happening in a particular area and they can take necessary action. Avoidance is not a solution, so come forward as it is not only an issue of your security, but security of your family, friends and all others.”
“We want Parramatta Park pathway to be better lightened and have more CCTV cameras”, added Arunesh
Premier of NSW, Mike Baird said, “I was touched to hear the community had organised a gathering at the park where Prabha Arun Kumar tragically lost her lost her life.”
“Last night’s candlelight vigil demonstrates how shocked we are that such a vicious attack could have taken place in suburban Sydney, where we live in peace and harmony.”
“The community united in mourning last night and Prabha’s family can take comfort in the knowledge they are in our thoughts and prayers at this devastating time.”
“A dedicated team of police officers and detectives is investigating Prabha’s death and I am confident the perpetrator of this crime will be brought to justice.”
