The wider Auburn community is invited to come together and join in a very special local event on September 11,  2014.

A candlelight walk  has been organised through the Auburn Town Centre which  will help raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental health issues within the local community. People are asked to meet at Auburn Public School, entry via Harrow Road at 6.30pm.

Local MP Barbara Perry said that a public forum held at Auburn Public School in May 2014 started a meaningful conversation about the devastating impacts of suicide and expressed a desire to actively respond to this challenging issue.

“It was acknowledged that the language barriers and cultural diversity within our diverse local community mean that it is vital to develop relevant and effective local strategies”.

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s business and now is the time for us to act. It has been an honour to work closely with wonderful community based organisations like the Salvation Army,Auburn Community Mental Health team, Dooleys Catholic Club and othersduring the last few months,” Barbara Perry said.

Captain NesanKistan from The Salvation Army Auburn said that the candlelight walk through the Auburn Town Centre will mark the launch of a long term strategy which will include other events and training opportunities.

“The event has already attracted great interest. Local schools (Granville Boys HS, Trinity Catholic and Auburn Girls HS) will be performing at the Auburn Central forecourt at the endof the walk and we are excited to announce that the Bulldogs’ Reni Maitua will be there too.

“According to the World Health Organisation, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds. Education and people being included and valued is the key, so everyone is welcome to be involved. It would be wonderful to have as many people as possible to participate in this vital community-based initiative,” Captain Kistan said.
